What is e-Shram?
e-Shram is the National Database of Unorganised Workers (NDUW) built by the Ministry of Labour & Employment. It covers construction workers, migrant workers, gig and platform workers, street vendors, domestic workers, agricultural workers and others. Each registered worker gets a permanent 12-digit UAN (Universal Account Number). The government uses this database to deliver social security and welfare benefits and to make benefits portable for migrant and construction workers.
Who can register?
- A worker in the unorganised sector – home-based, self-employed or a wage worker
- Aged 16 or above at the time of registration
- Not a member of EPFO, ESIC or government-funded NPS
- Not an income-tax payee
- No income limit or educational qualification is prescribed
Documents needed
Only your Aadhaar number, an Aadhaar-linked mobile number and a bank account with IFSC. No proof of date of birth or income is needed. At a CSC you do not submit any documents – just carry your Aadhaar number and mobile number.
Common problems
OTP not received: The OTP goes only to the mobile linked with Aadhaar. If it is not linked, register with biometrics at a CSC or State Seva Kendra.
Wrong photo: The photo comes from Aadhaar, so it cannot be changed on e-Shram. Update it in Aadhaar first, then do Aadhaar re-eKYC on e-Shram.
Portal not loading: Refresh the page, clear your browser cache or try another browser. If the problem continues, call 14434 or file a complaint at gms.eshram.gov.in.
Updating details: Log in with your UAN and OTP to update mobile number, address, occupation, education and skills. The ministry advises registered workers to keep their profile and occupation up to date.
How to Apply
- Open eshram.gov.in and click "REGISTER on eShram" on the home page.
- Enter your Aadhaar-linked mobile number and verify with OTP.
- Enter your Aadhaar number and complete e-KYC with the Aadhaar OTP – name and photo are fetched from Aadhaar.
- Fill in address, education, occupation and skill details.
- Enter your savings bank account number and IFSC code and submit.
- After registration you get a 12-digit UAN – download and keep your e-Shram card.
- If your mobile is not linked to Aadhaar, register with biometrics at a nearby CSC or State Seva Kendra.
